Most photographers charge based on what their competitors are doing. That is a fast track to burnout. Use this tool to reverse-engineer your pricing based on the life you want to live, not the industry average.

How to Read Your Results

Did the number on the right scare you? It’s common for photographers to be shocked when they see their “Required Hourly Rate” for the first time. Here is how to interpret the inputs to get an accurate number.

The Billable Hours Trap

This is the most critical slider. Do not put 40 hours here.

As a freelancer, you cannot bill for every hour you work. You don’t get paid for answering emails, marketing on Instagram, or updating your website. A realistic full-time photographer usually only has 15–20 billable hours (shooting time) per week. The rest is admin.

Estimated Tax Rate

Remember that the money hitting your bank account isn’t yours yet. In many European countries, setting aside 30–50% for taxes and social fees is standard. In the US, self-employment tax can surprise you. It’s better to estimate high and get a refund later.

Monthly Business Expenses

Don’t just count your Adobe subscription. Factor in gear depreciation (saving for your next camera), insurance, website hosting, and studio rent. Even if you work from home, you are using electricity and the internet.

What if My Rate is Too High for My Market?

If the calculator says you need to charge $200/hour, but your local market only pays $100/hour, you have a business problem. You have three options:

  • Shoot more efficient hours (Spend less time editing).
  • Lower your expenses (Do you really need that new lens?).
  • Target better clients (Move from budget weddings to premium commercial work).

This tool gives you the raw data. It’s up to you to build the strategy.
